The operative hysteroscope generally consists of 4 interlocking pieces, which when fully assembled also (similar to a resectoscope) allows for continuous flow of fluid through the uterine cavity and use of a semirigid operating instrument that is passed through a telescope bridge that has an operating channel. The operating instruments may include scissors, grasping forceps or biopsy forceps. These operative hysteroscopes do not use cautery to perform their surgery (as opposed to electrosurgery via a resectoscope). Many surgeons consider the operating instruments to be too flimsy for difficult operative hysteroscopy cases, and prefer a resectoscope in these situations.
