Any needles, scalpels, broken glass, or other articles that could cause a wound or puncture to those handling them are called “sharps” and need to be disposed of safely.

Special “sharps containers” are available. As an alternative, many people use other heavy plastic containers that are essentially “puncture resistant” to temporarily store their sharps. You should contact your municipality (township or city) to determine whether there are local rules governing the disposal of sharps.
