Photograph of a transvaginal ultrasound scan that reveals a single intrauterine gestational sac within the uterine cavity at 8 weeks gestational age (6 weeks after fertilization). In my practice, the gestational sac is normally seen to contain an embryo that measures about 16-18mm (crown to rump length) with upper and lower limb buds (short arm and leg limbs that are beginning to grow outward) at this gestational age.
