Success (pregnancy rates) with In Vitro Fertilization appears to be limited by the inefficiency of uterine implantation (during these procedures). The efficiency of human embryo implantation into the uterus during IVF cycles may be reduced by (a) suboptimal oocyte (egg) quality, (b) timing or technique of embryo transfer, or (c) preparation of the uterus (either anatomically or in terms of the endometrial lining). Preparation of the uterus is the focus of these sections on implantation.

Specific issues of concern with respect to implantation that are reviewed in this section include gestational surrogacy the window of uterine implantation and immunologic barriers to implantation.
