A resectoscope generally consists of 4 interlocking pieces, which when fully assembled allows for continuous flow irrigation and aspiration of the uterine cavity and use of an operating element (including a movable thumb support that controls the degree of extension or retraction of an attached working element). The instruments that can be attached to the operating element include cutting loops that are angled or straight, coagulating balls of various sizes, coagulating barrels of various sizes, and a needle electrode.
Inflow and outflow ports usually have stopcocks that are controlled by the surgeon to control the flow of liquid through the uterus. A light source is attached to the hysteroscope and an electrical cord is attached to the working element and a monopolar electrical generator.
