There are a large variety of instruments that can be used during operative laparoscopy. Many of the instruments have a handle that is attached to one of many operating elements (such as a “big bird” grasper, a tissue dissector, or scissors). The diameter of the operating element determines the size of the accessory trocar required to enter the instrument (often a 5mm diameter instrument).
